This retrospective cohort study deals with the causes of death among 57,000 military personnel who served in the French Navy surface vessels and were observed over the period 1975–2000. We successively compared the mortality rate and the specific causes of death between two groups differing in their potential exposure levels to radar. Occupational exposure was defined according to the on-board workplace (radar and control groups). The age-adjusted death ratios of the navy personnel were compared. For all causes of death, the results showed that 885 deaths in the radar group and 299 in the control group occurred (RR = 1.00 (95?% CI: 0.88–1.14)). RRs were 0.92 (95?% CI: 0.69–1.24) for neoplasms. For the duration of follow-up, the results did not show an increased health risk for military personnel exposed to higher levels of radio frequencies in the radar group, but the number of deaths was very small for some cancer sites.  相似文献

BackgroundAtopic dermatitis (AD) and psoriasis (Pso) are highly prevalent chronic inflammatory skin diseases. They share similarities regarding severity and impact on quality of life but display differences regarding risk factors, comorbidities, and pathogenesis.ObjectiveThis study sought to assess the prevalence of AD and Pso among the French population, along with associated comorbidities, and to compare these data with those of the age- and gender-adjusted French population with neither AD nor Pso.MethodsThe survey was conducted by a polling institute between September 1 and November 30, 2016, with proportional quota sampling being applied to render the study population representative of the French population. In all, 20 012 individuals were selected from among 900,000 internet users aged  15 years.ResultsOverall, 20,012 adults (48.8% men; 51.2% women) completed a digital questionnaire. The prevalence of AD was 4.65% [95% confidence interval (CI) 4.36%–4.94%] and that of Pso was 4.42% [95% CI: 4.14%–4.71%]. More AD patients presented  1 comorbidity compared to subjects without AD (57.04% vs. 49.2%, P < 0.0001) and more Pso patients presented  1 comorbidity compared to subjects without Pso (60.68% vs. 49.05%, P < 0.0001). After adjustment for gender and age, hypertension and dyslipidemia, a greater prevalence of osteoarticular, respiratory and psychiatric diseases was noted in both AD and Pso patients, whereas increased prevalence of obesity was seen only in Pso patients. The prevalence of components of metabolic syndrome was higher among Pso than AD patients.ConclusionFurther studies are required to consolidate these findings, to better characterize the entire spectrum of AD and Pso comorbidities, and to better identify determinants and risk factors, along with targeted therapies.  相似文献

ObjectivesTo study the prevalence of benign EEG variants (BEVs) in the sleep–wake cycle among 1163 consecutive patients.MethodsProspective, observational EEG study using the 10–20 system with systematically two additional anterior-temporal electrodes. Depending on clinical indications, other electrodes were added. REM sleep identification was based on its characteristic EEG grapho-elements and rapid eye movements, clearly detectable with the additional anterior-temporal and fronto-polar electrodes due to eye proximity. The video-EEG monitoring duration was between 24 hours and eight days.ResultsWe identified 710 patients (61%) with BEVs. Positive occipital sharp transients of sleep (POSTs) were observed in 36.4% of participants, mu rhythm in 22.4%, lambda waves in 16.7%, wicket spikes (WS) in 15%, 14- and 6-Hz positive bursts in 8.3%, benign sporadic sleep spikes (BSSS) in 3.3%, rhythmic mid-temporal theta burst of drowsiness (RMTD) in 2.15%, midline theta rhythm in 2.1% and six-Hz spike and wave (SW) bursts in 0.1%. WS and RMTD were present during wakefulness, NREM (14.1%, 1.3%, respectively) and REM sleep (3.3%, 1.1%, respectively). Mu rhythm was also observed during NREM (1.5%) and REM sleep (7.7%). Fourteen- and 6-Hz positive bursts were present during NREM (4.5%) and REM sleep (6.5%). BSSS and six-Hz SW bursts were only observed during NREM sleep.ConclusionsThe prevalence of BEVs is much higher than current estimates. POSTs and WS can no longer be considered as unusual patterns but physiological patterns of NREM sleep. RMTD and mu rhythm may be observed during NREM and REM sleep.  相似文献

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is characterised by early metastasis and resistance to anti-cancer therapy, leading to an overall poor prognosis. Despite continued research efforts, no targeted therapy has yet shown meaningful efficacy in PDAC; mutations in the oncogene KRAS and the tumour suppressor TP53, which are the most common genomic alterations in PDAC, have so far shown poor clinical actionability. Autophagy, a conserved process allowing cells to recycle altered or unused organelles and cellular components, has been shown to be upregulated in PDAC and is implicated in resistance to both cytotoxic chemotherapy and targeted therapy. Autophagy is thus regarded as a potential therapeutic target in PDAC and other cancers. Although the molecular mechanisms of autophagy activation in PDAC are only beginning to emerge, several groups have reported interesting results when combining inhibitors of the extracellular-signal-regulated kinase/mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway and inhibitors of autophagy in models of PDAC and other KRAS-driven cancers. In this article, we review the existing preclinical data regarding the role of autophagy in PDAC, as well as results of relevant clinical trials with agents that modulate autophagy in this cancer.Subject terms: Pancreatic cancer, Pancreatic cancer  相似文献
